On Friday 7th July, music lovers and educators came together at Shine - the Associated Board of the Royal Schools’ of Music’s new music education event at the Barbican. The event marked the beginning of our long term partnership with the initiative from the UK’s leading music examination board.
Shine saw over 200 young musicians delighting guests during a two-hour showcase, with inspirational performances from Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Josie Duncan, Jess Gillam and Ben Goldsheider. Two London based schools also had the opportunity to share the Barbican stage with some of the UK’s leading professional musicians from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and Southbank Sinfonia.

Leadership in education was celebrated with the Music Teacher of the Year Awards, presented by Myleene Klass. Congratulations to Robert Parton, Grace Jack, Una Birtchnell, Felivity Kirk and Linda Filby-Borrett!
After such an inspiring morning, the afternoon gave attendees the chance to reflect, discuss and make music with a selection of practical workshops delivered by music organisations and educators from across the UK. This included an open rehearsal with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra and a practical workshop of Shine, the newly commissioned piece written for the initiative by composer Mark Armstrong.
Of our partnership of the initiative, Michael Elliott, ABRSM Chief Executive, said, “Shine is a celebration of leadership and innovation in music education. Together with our partners, we want to highlight the impact of musical progression and showcase the next generation of inspirational leaders! We are also choosing this occasion to launch a Commission for Music, an independent year-long inquiry designed to explore how more people can fulfil their potential as music learners. We’re looking forward to working with Allianz in a number of ways to extend our reach and build engaging opportunities for music lovers.”
All in all, a truly inspiring day that put music education into the spotlight - and there is more to come! Stay tuned to keep up to date with our partnership with ABRSM’s Shine - including special offers and resources!
