Brits vote for Bing Crosby to beat X Factor winner to Christmas number one spot

27th November 2010

This year's X Factor hopefuls Cher Lloyd, Matt Cardle and Rebecca Furguson may soon have their hopes of an instant number one dashed. As the race for the Christmas number one slot begins, research from Allianz Musical Insurance has revealed that Brits only want the X Factor winner to climb as high as number two.

The tune Brits are backing to be number one this festive season is the re-release of Bing Crosby's, 'White Christmas' by Bryn Terfel. By holding the X Factor winner off the top spot this re-release would continue last year's trend when Rage Against the Machine's 'Killing In The Name' kept Joe McElderry off the top spot. It would also allow this old favourite to finally achieve a UK Christmas number one for the first time since the song was recorded in 1947.

The research by Allianz Musical Insurance reveals in order of preference the top five artists tipped for the coveted number one slot, this year:

  1. Bing Crosby & Bryn Terfel , White Christmas
  2. X Factor Winner
  3. Shane MacGowan and The Priests, Little Drummer Boy
  4. Ellie Goulding, Your Song
  5. Mariah Carey, All I Want For Christmas

The festive tune, 'The Fairytale of New York' by The Pogues, was voted as the favourite Christmas song of all time, followed closely by Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas' and Band Aid.

The UK's top five favourite Christmas songs of all time are:

  1. The Pogues, Fairytale of New York
  2. Mariah Carey, All I Want For Christmas
  3. Band Aid, Do They Know It's Christmas?
  4. Wham, Last Christmas
  5. Chris Rea, Driving Home for Christmas
