All Brits want under their post recession Christmas tree

12th December 2010

Almost a year has passed since the UK officially left recession and as Brits face their first post-recession Christmas, new research from Allianz Musical Insurance reveals what Brits want to give and receive this festive season.

To give...

  • A third (34%)of Brits now prefer to give more lasting, worthwhile Christmas presents due to the recession
  • One fifth (22%) will try to give cheaper presents due to the recent economic conditions
  • Shane MacGowan and The Priests, Little Drummer Boy
  • Almost half of Brits (49%) like to give Christmas presents that would be a treat, and something the recipient wouldn't buy themselves
  • 30% of Christmas givers aim to gift useful presents

And to receive...

  • Only one in 10 (11%) like to receive presents for Christmas that are only short-term such as chocolates and toiletries
  • Four in 10 (41%) like to receive something they will keep and invest their time in
  • Two thirds of Brits admit that the presents under their tree on Christmas morning do not hold their attention for longer than a month
  • Wham, Last Christmas
  • 74% prefer to have lots of presents to open on Christmas day

With a third of Brits now preferring to give longer-lasting presents, Allianz Musical Insurance's research also revealed that the majority (77%) of British musicians received their first musical instrument as a present. In order to extend this tradition, half (51%) of today's musicians want to share their passion for music and give musically themed presents this Christmas.

Their reasons for doing this are:

  1. Musical presents last longer
  2. They want to encourage others to play music
  3. They want to share their musical passion

Musicians also selected the top Christmas presents that would complement their musical instrument:

  1. Music lessons
  2. Tickets to a relevant concert or gig
  3. Sheet music
  4. Accessories e.g. music stand
  5. Insurance

Colin Young, Allianz Musical Insurance Marketing Manager said, "Britain has a great musical tradition and Christmas is a key time of year to pass this on as we all enjoy the festive carols and pop songs that evoke memories of previous celebrations.

"Parents and musicians, are a driving force behind encouraging children, and wider family and friends to make the most of their musical talents and appreciate the longer lasting qualities of receiving a musical instrument."
